Ministry Of Tourism Pledges Support To Fight Open Defecation In The Western Region
The Honourable Minister for Tourism, Catherine Afeku, says her ministry stands in support with the Western Region as it fights the degrading practice of open defecation.
According to her, the region plays home to a number of tourist destinations in the country with some recognized as world heritage sites. She said it is necessary to keep these areas and the region as a whole clean in order to attract more tourists into the country.
Madam Afeku pledged this support after she paid a working visit to some selected tourist sites in the Western region on wednessday to ascertain the extent to which people indulge in the practice of open defecation and reinforce commitment to fighting the menace..
Madam Afeku said the canker of open defecation is a primary concern to all well-meaning Ghanaians and not her ministry alone.
She said it is wrong to accept the practice as a way of life for people who live along the coastal stretch of the country.
“...it can’t be something that we just leave and say that is just the attitude of the fisher folks. No! Nobody was born with this up bringing so together with you, as partners, we will have to put the right things in place. It is not only the tourism industry that is fighting this fight. We have done the letters we are yet to distribute to the sanitation ministry, Fisheries and Aquaculture, and Local Government
She cautioned people of the region against the practice and warned that perpetrators of the act will be dealt with.
The visit will took the minister to some of the tourist attraction sites in Takoradi, Axim beaches, and other tourist attraction sites in the region.
The tourism minister is being accompanied by the Acting Chief Director of Tourism, Dr Joel Sonne, Campaign Coordinator against open Defecation, Nana Anim, Tourism Ambassador, Lucky Mensah and Van Vicker
